How each platform counts

Every limit, with its source

These are the same rules Yaybird checks before any post goes out, worked out from the code that checks them. The “more” cut points are approximate: each app cuts at a word, and a little earlier on narrow screens.

X

Every link counts as 23 characters, and an emoji or a Chinese, Japanese or Korean character as 2, as X’s own counter does.

Bluesky

Counts characters as you see them, so an emoji made of several parts counts once.

YouTube

Counts a description in bytes: an accented letter is 2, an emoji 4. A plain English description can use all 5,000.

Everyone else

Counted on the safe side, in the units their apps use, so some emoji count as 2.

Questions

Post preview questions

What is the character limit on each platform?

Instagram 2,200, TikTok 2,200 (4,000 on a photo post), LinkedIn 3,000, Facebook 63,206, Threads 500, YouTube descriptions 5,000 bytes, X 280, Bluesky 300 and Pinterest descriptions 800. Each one links its source on this page.

Where does Instagram cut a caption?

After about 125 characters or 2 lines, whichever comes first, behind “more”. LinkedIn cuts at about 210 characters or 3 lines, and Facebook at about 480. Put the part that matters first.

How many hashtags can I use?

Instagram takes up to 5 a post, and Threads one topic tag. Yaybird checks no number on the others, but a caption full of tags still reads as spam.

Why does X count my post differently?

X counts every link as 23 characters, however long it is, and an emoji or a Chinese, Japanese or Korean character as 2. This tool counts the same way, so a post that fits here fits on X.

Is my caption or photo uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser: the photo is shown from your device and never sent anywhere, and nothing is stored. The share link carries the caption in the part of the address your browser never sends to a server.

Is this the same check Yaybird runs on real posts?

Yes. The limits, the counting and the previews are the same code the app uses, so a caption that fits here passes Yaybird’s platform checks too. Yaybird also checks your brand’s rules, which this tool does not have.
