What is happening?!
Step by step
The count updates as you type, the way X counts.
Under 280 it fits. Over it, the part that does not fit is shown struck out.
Cut words until it fits, or copy the thread version, numbered part by part.
See it as X shows it, then copy it into X, or let your assistant post it.
The rules
X does not count every character as one. This counter uses the same rules, from X’s own counting library, as Yaybird does on every post. Source
| Letters, numbers, spaces and line breaks | 1 each |
|---|---|
| Any link, however long | 23 (X shortens it to t.co) |
| An emoji, or a Chinese, Japanese or Korean character | 2 each |
| Photos, videos and GIFs | 0 |
| The @names X adds when you reply | 0 |
Premium accounts can post up to 25,000 characters. Everyone else, and everyone replying, has 280. Source
Questions
280 characters a post for most accounts. X Premium subscribers can post up to 25,000, and everyone can read those longer posts. Replies follow the same limits.
X weighs characters: every link counts as 23, however long it is, and an emoji or a Chinese, Japanese or Korean character counts as 2. A plain word counter misses that. This one counts the way X does, with X’s own counting rules.
Yes, each space and each line break counts as one character on X.
Photos, videos and GIFs count as 0. A link always counts as 23, whether it is short or very long, because X shortens every link to a t.co address.
Split it into a thread: this counter does it for you, cutting between paragraphs and sentences and numbering each part. Or post it as one long post with X Premium.
No. It is counted in your browser and never leaves it. Nothing is stored or uploaded.
