The formulas
What each platform counts
Each divides the same interactions by a different number, so each answers a different question. By followers: how much your audience cares. By reach: how much the people who saw it did. By views: how well this one post landed. Source
By followers
(likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ followers × 100
By reach
(likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ accounts reached × 100
By views or impressions
(likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ views × 100
| Platform | Its own engagement rate |
|---|---|
| Instagram has no engagement rate of its own. Its insights count interactions as likes, saves, comments and shares, the four used here. Source | |
| TikTok | TikTok One divides likes, comments and shares by video views (saves are left out). Source |
| LinkedIn divides clicks, reactions, comments and reposts by impressions. Source | |
| X | X divides engagements (every like, reply, repost, follow and click on the post) by impressions. Source |
| Facebook reports post engagement (reactions, comments, shares and more) but no engagement rate. Source | |
| YouTube | YouTube Studio shows likes, comments and watch time but no engagement rate. Source |
Questions
Engagement rate questions
How do you calculate engagement rate?
Add up a post’s interactions (likes, comments, shares and saves) and divide by a base, then multiply by 100. The base is your followers, the post’s reach, or its views or impressions. This calculator shows all three, so you can compare like with like.
What is a good engagement rate?
It depends on the platform and the formula. By followers, Rival IQ’s 2026 benchmark puts the median brand at about 2.01% on TikTok, 0.30% on Instagram, 0.21% on YouTube and 0.03% on X. Your own trend over time matters more than any one number.
How does LinkedIn calculate engagement rate?
LinkedIn’s Page analytics divide interactions (clicks, reactions, comments and reposts) by impressions. Put those numbers in the LinkedIn tab and the impressions rate is LinkedIn’s own.
How does X calculate engagement rate?
X divides engagements by impressions. Engagements are every interaction with the post: likes, replies, reposts, follows and clicks anywhere on it. Enter X’s engagements total as likes, replies, reposts and other engagements, and its impressions.
Should I use followers, reach or views?
Followers for comparing accounts, since everyone shows a follower count. Reach or views for judging one post, since they count who actually saw it. For TikTok, Reels and Shorts, views are the fairest base, as most viewers do not follow you.
Does Instagram show an engagement rate?
No. Instagram’s insights show interactions (likes, saves, comments and shares), accounts reached and views, but no rate. Copy those into the Instagram tab to get one.
